Legends and
Folklore:
It was originally discovered in
southern Germany near the border of the Czech Republic, in an
area called the Bavarian Woods. The actual town is called
Zwiesel. This first discovery was made about 250 years ago. This
region was known for glass making and using quartz to make their
glass. The King of Bavaria eventually took over the mining of
the rose quartz, which is probably how it gained popularity.
Through archaeology we learn that Rose Quartz was used by the
Assyrians as early as 800-600 B.C. In later times it was
extremely popular with the Romans. The world's highest quality
rose quartz is coming out of the pegmatites of Madagascar. It
has the best saturation of color as well as the best material
for making star rose quartz spheres and beads. The Malagasy rose
quartz is the most famous from this region. Sometimes small lots
of clear, large, homogenous pieces with strong color are found
that can be used for faceting. |
