Hexagonal, barrel-shaped crystals with either tapered or stubby terminations. Transparent to translucent or semi-opaque. An accessory mineral of igneous rocks. Ruby represents the red corundum. Other colors are blue, yellow, green, purple, and colorless (sapphires).

Although rubies are found around the world, the best come from Thailand, India, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Burma, and North Carolina/U.S.A.
