Legends and
Folklore:
The name is from
Singhalese tourmalli, "mixed colored stones". Importation of
this mineral goes as far back as the Greeks and Romans who
imported it from the Orient. The Dutch colonists used it to
clean ash from pipes. When heated, tourmaline develops an
electrical charge and the stone was referred to as the "electric
stone". Because of this, tourmaline had been used in pressure
gauges and thermometers. |
