A type of chalcedony, which comes in
several colors and is often banded. Black onyx is
actually heat treated deep gray colored chalcedony.

Legends and Folklore:
In the
Middle East, onyx was used as a worry stone because they
believed the stone absorbed negative energy, a belief
that may have been produced by the Chinese miners who
feared it and pulled the material out of the mine and
immediately sold it outside the country. In India it is
worn to protect against the evil eye. It is said to have
a trapped demon within it.
