Sterling Silver – How and Why you need to clean it
This special report is here to educate and inform you about how to care for and clean Sterling Silver Jewelry. Sterling Silver Jewelry is probably the most beautiful jewelry there is, and it is most beautiful in its purest and cleanest form. If your chain arrives tarnished, we will of course immediately replace it. Read on.
Sterling Silver Jewelry reacts with oxygen and “oxidizes” which means it turns BLACK or tarnishes. It can turn yellow, gold, bronze, brown and all variations of these colors. It can look burnt when tarnished. Some people find this upsetting and give up on Sterling Silver due to the fact that it is not maintenance free. In fact, if one of our chains arrives tarnished, you can rest assured that it is in fact real Sterling Silver. However, with some simple tips, your Sterling Silver Jewelry can last a lifetime and remain bright.
CARE OF SILVER
You need to keep Sterling Silver Jewelry away from air when you are not wearing it. This is easy. Just place it in a zip-lock sandwich bag and squeeze all the air out. Additionally, Silver cannot tarnish in the presence of aluminum foil! So simply take a little square of foil and place it in the bag with the silver. It will remain tarnish free (unlike when left in a jewelry drawer or box where it turns blackish over time)!
When you wear Sterling Silver Jewelry your skin oil helps to protect it and keep it shiny by keeping air off it. We do not recommend wearing it 24/7, though many people do. Shampoo and soap can cause the silver to tarnish quicker by simply washing off the skin oil that has accumulated on the jewelry. This is fine as long as you know how to handle it and clean it.
CLEANING
You can use chemicals like Tarn-X to easily clean silver, however we do not like harsh chemicals. Here is an easy, simple method for cleaning and de-tarnishing chains and Sterling Silver Jewelry using common household items.
Here is the recipe:
1) Boil some tap water in a tea kettle or pot.
2) Line a cereal bowl with Aluminum Foil shiny side up.
3) Place the chain or Sterling Silver Jewelry on the foil in the bowl (touching the foil)
4) Sprinkle ½ teaspoon of table salt over it
5) Add 1 tablespoon of common baking soda (a couple of Alka Seltzer tablets will
also work fine)
6) Gently pour the boiling water over the mix and agitate or stir.
7) Let it sit for 5 minutes.
8) Rinse thoroughly with tap water.
9) Dry thoroughly with a towel and/or a hair drier to get it completely dry.
Again, store it in a baggie with some aluminum foil.
Now how much simpler can that be? I cannot tell you how many women have almost cried when they learn this method and are sad because of all the Sterling Silver they threw out for being “irreparably tarnished” when all they had to do was the above.
